320 kbps for Rendezvous with old LG loudspeakers

Obrazek

Every Friday at 5.06 p.m. and in repeat Saturday at around 1 p.m. Svergies Radio offers a relaxed music mix. Latin, lounge, exotica, cool jazz, chanson - music from the 20s to the 20s. This radio show is called Rendezvous and is hosted by long-time music journalist Kristjan Saag, who also has a Spotify list.

The PC4uMusic configuration provides a lot of pleasure while listening to the very interesting music presented in this program, which is also transmitted in a 320 kbps stream with studio sampling standard 48 kHz and precisely encoded with Advanced Audio Coding. The topic of these streamed transmissions has already been presented in the text entitled BBC Sound HD free from Swedish Radio 2

Great relaxation with music is provided even by the optimal PC4uMusic setting for standard 3-way speakers from the Korean manufacturer LG and they have a 10-inch bass with a passive crossover, which still has the original capacitors from years ago.

The Windows Audio Session Application Programming Interface setting in AIMP provided 192 kHz 32 bit oversampling for Sound HD from Swedish Radio. The topic of the WASAPI and software for music playnig has already been presented in the text entitled 64 bit programs are better for Broadcasted Music PC Receiver

The analog signal from the PC was connected directly (main in) to the power amplifier to ensure the lowest possible risk of clipping. The manufacturer provides the power in the technical specification: 2x85 W DIN (1 kHz, 4 Ohm, 1% THD). During testing, playback is of much better quality and uses less watts. The speakers are connected to the long-proven Supra cable with oxygen-free copper (2x2.5 mm).

The speakers are powered by the relatively inexpensive Rotel RX 950 AX

Power output: RMS 50 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo)
Frequency response: 20Hz to 20kHz
Total harmonic distortion: 0.03%
Damping factor: 100
Signal to noise ratio(line):100dB

The DIN 45000 defines different methods to measure power, depending on the device under test. For home applicances there are three different numbers for power: Continous power, Peak power and power bandwidth; the latter does not apply for speakers.Power measurement of an amp requires that the amp is properly terminated by Ohmic resistances of nominal value both at input and output. The cont inous power is measured when the amp is supplied by its normal power supply. It must then be able to deliver the rated power at 1 kHz for at least 10 minutes while the maximum THD (total harmonic distortion ) does not exceed 1 %. To measure the peak power the normal power supply is replaced by a regulated power supply and the time for delivering the power is reduced. Thus, higher values for peak power are obtained - in this case 2x85 watts.

The signal from the PC was optimally configured in the sound processor (Realtek) controller to match the speaker arrangement. This configuration is intended for home theater and the PC must have such outputs, but it also works in traditional stereo. The speakers were half a meter above the floor and inverted with the bass reflex opening at the top. In this way, the most audible sound band was reproduced at the height of the sitting person's ears.

Simple automatic calibration is also available for free from Microsoft on Windows, but the driver from the manufacturer Realtek performed better in this configuration PC4uMusic for Sound HD with WASAPI in AIMP.

The speakers were only matched with furniture by the Rad-Pol upholstery workshop for exhibition in the Sopot showroom.

They are from a relatively inexpensive LG offer and have a typical bas-reflex design, with a hole near the floor.

The PC4uMusic configuration gives even better results with modern speakers with active crossovers, and Tanonoy Gold 8 will take up less space at home than the old LG. Another alternative is 4 pcs of Tannoy Gold 5. More information is available in the text titled: British proposals for new 4 ch surround in Windows.

There are also wide possibilities with self-built speakers, as described in the text entitled 2x50W in back-loaded horn for 4x100 at home. 4 full-range speakers ensure good sound distribution in the room. Even if they are only 4 inches and don't cost much. PC software can correct their imperfections when the amplifiers have sufficient power and are not overrated, and this is facilitated by the lack of a crossover. The backloaded horn makes it much easier to drive low tones, which require more energy in other designs.

Active loudspeakers with digital crossovers are also now available and their potential is even greater than the current British wireless proposals from KEF

The potential of PC and digital crossover in active loudspeakers is best demonstrated by Genelec from Finland and is a professional solution for a recording studio

Audiophiles don't have to limit the PC to a standard form

  1. DIN 45500 was a 1966 German DIN standard for the minimum quality requirements in household audio equipment. It aimed to define the terms High Fidelity and Hi-Fi according to this standard. It was replaced by the EN 61305 standard in 1996, which restricted itself to the measurement methods and performance characteristics, omitting the outdated minimum requirements.
